Over 260 civilians killed by Russian mines, explosives, claims Ukraine

The military of Ukraine reported on Wednesday that over 260 civilians had perished in the country as a result of walking on landmines or other explosives during the country’s 20-month conflict with Russia.

A third of the nation, or 174,000 sq km, according to Kyiv, may be covered in mines or other hazardous remnants of the war.

More than 560 incidents involving mines or explosives left over from the fighting have resulted in at least 571 injuries, according to a Telegram messenger post by the General Staff.

It also stated that fields were the scene of nearly 25% of the incidents.

Some farmers attempt to work in areas believed to be mine-contaminated, even though doing so carries risks. Two men were hurt on Wednesday when a tractor struck an unidentified explosive in the southern Mykolaiv region, according to the Interior Ministry.

“One of them had two legs amputated, the other refused to be taken to hospital after being examined,” it added on Telegram.

Sappers are desperately needed in Ukraine. Although it currently employs roughly 3,000 specialists, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal was cited by the Suspilne media as stating that 7,000 more are required to completely clear all of the mines.

About $37 billion in funding would be needed for that process; Kyiv is working with foreign partners to raise this amount.
