On Monday, Israeli troops detained a Palestinian activist who has been revered as a hero in the West Bank since she was a teenager. Her mother refuted the accusation, claiming it was based on a fabricated Instagram post.
Ahed Tamimi, 22, was reportedly captured by the Israeli military in the West Bank village of Nabi Saleh. When Tamimi, then 16 years old, smacked an Israeli soldier during a raid on her village in 2017, she became well-known. She has long opposed Israeli land seizures, as have others.
According to the military, Tamimi “is suspected of inciting violence and calling for terrorist activity to be carried out.”
More than a dozen Israeli soldiers broke into their home over night and took her into custody, according to her mother, Nariman Tamimi.
A screenshot of what looked to be an Instagram post by an account bearing Tamimi’s name and image was released by some Israeli media outlets. Israel’s West Bank settlers were threatened with “slaughter” in the text.
Tamimi was given an eight-month prison sentence after admitting guilt to reduced charges that included assault after slapping the soldier.
She is among the hundreds of people detained in the region as a result of the recent escalation in violence between Israel and Gaza militants.
As it launches a ground offensive against Gaza’s Hamas militants in the wake of the militant group’s deadly October 7 rampage in Israel, Israel claims that part of the reason for its arrests in the West Bank is to prevent further attacks.
In the West Bank, where Israeli troops and Palestinians frequently clash, violence has also flared up. According to U.N. figures, Israeli troops have killed at least 141 Palestinians in the territory since October 7, 43 of them were children.
