Israel strikes ambulance in Gaza, 15 dead, dozens injured

An Israeli air strike on an ambulance in northern Gaza killed 15 people and injured 60, according to the Hamas-controlled enclave’s health ministry.

The Israeli military said it targeted an ambulance “being used by a Hamas terrorist cell”. They stated that the strike killed Hamas fighters and accused the group of using ambulances to transport militants and weapons.

A Hamas official, Izzat El Reshiq, denied the allegations that their fighters were present. The Gaza health ministry spokesperson, Ashraf al-Qidra, stated that the ambulance was part of a convoy targeted by Israel near al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City.

Israel’s military did not provide evidence to support its claim that the ambulance was linked to Hamas but mentioned they would release more information later.

The military said, “We emphasize that this area is a battle zone. Civilians in the area are repeatedly called upon to evacuate southwards for their own safety,” reported Reuters.

United Nations chief Antonio Guterres said he was “horrified” by a strike by Israeli forces on a convoy of ambulances in Gaza.

“I am horrified by the reported attack in Gaza on an ambulance convoy outside Al Shifa hospital. The images of bodies strewn on the street outside the hospital are harrowing,” Guterres said, according to AFP.

World Health Organisation Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, “Utterly shocked by reports of attacks on ambulances evacuating patients close to Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza, leading to deaths, injuries and damage.”

Earlier, Gaza health authorities announced plans to send critically injured patients from besieged Gaza City to Egypt for urgent treatment.
