World Naked Gardening Day: Here's all you need to know about its history, significance and celebration

The first Saturday in the month of May is celebrated as World Naked Gardening Day. This year, the day falls on 7 May. Through its annual observance, World Naked Gardening Day aims to bring acceptance towards the natural human body.

For decades, nakedness has been associated with sexual acts and is considered taboo in most countries. The idea behind the initiative of World Naked Gardening Day is to help people feel liberated and let them connect with the natural world.

Gardening has a timeless quality to it and is one of the very few activities which families enjoy together. The idea behind celebrating such a day is to bring acceptance in people towards their bodies while promoting the idea of self-love and body positivity.

History and significance

The first World Naked Gardening Day was celebrated in 2005 by Body Freedom Collaborative, an organization founded by Mark Storey, consulting editor for Nude & Natural magazine, and permaculturist Jacob Gabriel. The day was established as a part of a Body Freedom Collaborative project, later endorsed by The Naturist Society and the American Association for Nude Recreation.

According to nationaldaycalendar.com, the first World Naked Gardening Day was celebrated on 10 September 2005. However, the date was later changed to the first Saturday of May.

Celebrations

Ever since its inception, many people have come forward to take part in World Naked Gardening Day. The purpose behind their participation in the event is not only to rejuvenate themselves but to also feel one with nature.

It is important for individuals celebrating the day to enjoy themselves around people they feel comfortable with. Therefore, many people join gardening clubs or celebrate World Naked Gardening Day in the backyard of their home with close friends or family.
